The Japan Patent Office released the 2026 Patent Administration Annual Report

On July 27, 2026, the Japan Patent Office (JPO) released its annual report on patent administration for 2026. This report summarizes the application and authorization trends of intellectual property rights in Japan and abroad, as well as the utilization of intellectual property rights by enterprises and universities. According to the report, the number of patent and utility model applications received by JPO in 2025 increased year-on-year, the volume of trademark authorizations reversed the previous decline to register positive growth, while the number of design applications decreased.

China Strengthens IP Protection on Integrated Circuit Layout Design

China has introduced a revised regulation concerning integrated circuit layout design, aimed at safeguarding exclusive design rights, fostering innovation, and promoting scientific and technological progress. This 54-article regulation, approved and released by the State Council, emphasizes the importance of intellectual property protection for integrated circuit layouts and calls for enhanced creation, application, management, and services in this area. The updated regulation is set to take effect on Oct 15.
